Mystic Aquarium - Beluga Whale
Mystic Aquarium, part of the Sea Research Foundation, was opened on October 6, 1973 as a privately owned corporation behind the financing of Kelvin Smith. The aquarium features Steller sea lions—it is one of three facilities in the United States that does, a large colony of Africa black-footed penguins, and one of the largest outdoor Beluga whale exhibits in the country, a 1-acre space with 750,000 US gallons of water, that was part of a $52 million expansion in 1999. An Ocean Exploration Center features maps, diagrams and models from Dr. Robert Ballard’s explorations of the Black sea and of the wreck of the RMS Titanic.
