Wildland firefighters from the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted an 84-acre prescribed burn on the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center and portions of the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge in Ashland, Wisconsin June 5. The fires were part of the Lake Superior Landscape Restoration Partnership to improve the health and resiliency of forests on public and private lands. Firefighters ignited fires in grassy areas near the visitor center and within the refuge. The purpose for the burn is to reduce hazardous fuel buildup, treat invasive reed canary grass and to prepare the area for tree planting. U.S. Forest Service photos by Al Barbian and Dave Melancon.
