Second floor slab

View of the completed section of concrete slab. This slab will require 28 days of hardening or “curing” to become strong enough to support itself. After 28 days, the forms can be removed and the concrete structure will be ready for the next phase of work; the installation of walls and finishes.

The construction contractor placed the first section of the second floor slab this past week. Concrete was poured and on the northwest corner of the building.

Assembling a building is like a very large assembly line similar to a factory. To start, crews begin the first floor and as the first floor progresses a separate crew begins work on the first floor walls. As the first floor and first floor walls are progressing, another crew begins the second floor. This process is a horizontal version of something seen on skyscrapers. As workers assembly the steel frame upwards, crews complete the lower floors. This saves time for the project by doing what is termed “concurrent activies” or more than one activity at a time.

Currently, there are three groups of crews working to install concrete at the new embassy. When finished, the new embassy will be two stories high with a mechanical penthouse. Soon the rough shape of the new embassy will be apparent from over the construction fence.
