Otto Storm and Poldi Müller in Der Mann mit der Maske

German postcard. Photochemie K.2016. Otto Storm and Poldi Müller in the Austrian silent film Der Mann mit der Maske (Hans Spalt, Sascha-Messter 1917). The film premiered in Vienna in 30 November 1917.

Otto Storm (1874 - 1950) was an Austrian stage actor and operetta singer, who also had leads in a handful of German silent films in the 1910s and returned from the mid-1930s as character actor.

Otto Storm was born as Otto Strejcek in Neusatz (now Novi Sad), then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Serbia). After many years at the theatre, e.g. at the Theater an der Wien ( he was the first René in Der Graf von Luxemburg in 1909), he played his first role in front of the camera in 1916 as Count Alfons von Rehlen in the Wiener Kunstfilm production Die Tragödie auf Schloss Rottersheim (1916), directed by Jacob and Luise Fleck, and with Liane Haid in the female lead. Two more silent movies followed in Austria: Das schwindende Herz (Alfred Halm, Sascha-Messter 1917) with Magda Sonja and Carl Goetz, and Der Mann mit der Maske (Hans Spalt, Sascha-Messter 1917) with Poldi Müller. After that, Storm concentrated on the theatre again. It took almost twenty years before he made his comeback to the film business in 1936 and impersonated supporting roles till 1943, mainly at the (now Tobis-)Sascha studios in Vienna. Among them were the productions Die Leuchter des Kaisers (1936) by director Karl Hartl, with Sybille Schmitz and Karl Ludwig Diehl, Hannerl und ihre Liebhaber (1936) with Hans Moser and Olga Tschechowa, Der Mann, von dem man spricht (1937) with Heinz Rühmann, Hans Moser and Theo Lingen and Ich bin Sebastian Ott (1939) with Willi Forst, Gustav Diessl and Paul Hörbiger. His last cinematical works were two Wien-Film productions: Der liebe Augustin (1940) by director E. W. Emo and Reisebekanntschaft (1943) with Hans Moser and Elfriede Datzig, again directed by Emo. Storm died in Vienna in 1950.

She was at times paired with Georg Reimers, Paul Morgan and Fritz Kortner. The latter also directed her in two films: Gregor Marold (1918) and Else von Erlenhof (1919). From 1919 she acted in mostly supporting parts for the German companies PAGU Union and Zelnik-Mara-Film, in films with e.g. Ellen Richter, Rudolf Forster and Lya Mara. In 1921 she made her last films in both Germany and Austria. All in all, Müller acted in 24 films.
