Dorothy Day (after Richard Avedon)
for Sherrie
Dorothy Day (after Richard Avedon), Tim Lowly © 2009, acrylic on panel, 4.5" x 9.5". Private collection.
I recently made this painting as a birthday gift for my wife Sherrie. Dorothy Day is one of her favorite writers / people. The photographer Richard Avedon took a black and white photograph of Dorothy Day which was used for a book related to her, but I could not locate the book. So my only reference for the painting was this low resolution photograph which Jim Forest has on his Flickr site. Incidentally, this one of very few occasions where I have used someone else's photograph as a reference and I think the only one where the photographer has been someone of Avedon's reknown.
Here is an essay Jim Forest wrote on Dorothy Day.
Incidentally, our daughter Temma's middle name is Day, in honor of Dorothy Day.
