Museum of Westward Expansion 0012
Animated robot in an exhibit at the Museum of Western Expansion beneath the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, in July 2011.
The Gateway Arch was proposed in late 1933 by civic leaders looking to improve the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri. The Gateway Arch was designed by Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947. Repeated delays due to funding, siting, and what to do with the railroad tracks passing through the area meant that ground was not broken until 1959. Construction itself began on February 12, 1963. The Gateway Arch was dedicated by Vice President Hubert Humphrey on May 25, 1968. Its final cost was $13 million.
The Museum of Westward Expansion opened in the visitors' center beneath the arch in 1968.
