Lemmings are the linchpin species in the terrestrial Arctic. Most predators depend on them to some extent and high numbers even benefit prey species. Arctic Hare numbers peak the year after lemmings peak due to the lack of pressure on them. Shorebirds have greater nesting success in good lemming years for the same reason.

 

Ermine are voracious predators of lemmings and I was lucky today to have this one carrying one back home.
