Some Background History if you care,
In the beginning, there was life. Life was good, life was ever-changing, ever growing, ever loving. Then, life fell. In 'God's eyes' life was now tainted, unclean with 'sin'. All stories point to one 'original sin' and an 'original sinner'. The result of this was Death. Death came like a plague upon the land. Everything from the meekest to the greatest fell before Death. The great equalizer of men, the final sleep - a great many names became associated with the phenomenon.
Yet, even in Death, life was birthed. Clawing its way from the rotting remains of its past, life sprung anew the light known as hope and those who lived to hold onto it. Death on the other hand was ever-lasting, ever-lonely and completely stagnant. The methods of death changed. Old Age, Murder, Vengeance, Warfare - the finality of it remained the same. And yet, some sought to manipulate death, manipulate the dead. Even bring back those who Death had already claimed.
Death needed something, a ledger keeper, a confidant, an ambassador to the living. Something which understood 'death' and would not see things as the living did. However, doing things as the living did them, bringing back the dead to life was not in Death's interest. Instead, Death would craft its own entity, its own instruments for its own purposes. For this reason the ones we call 'Hakujou' came to be. Their name means 'heartless'. They no longer share life, its constraints or its philosophy. Their nature is seen in their murderous eyes not stained with remorse or regret. Their reasons displayed on blood-stained wings which make the very air around them cry out in agony and despair.
The penultimate representation of these 'Hakujou' is their 'Dragon'. Tatsudoshi Hakujou, born of death, in servitude to death - Tatsudoshi Hakujou keeps the 'instrument of death', 'death's ledger'. A recording of all those who have died, all those who are dying and all those who will die. The words, numbers and reasons are ever changing while totally stagnant. For such is the nature of 'death'.
What say you? Mortals, Immortals, Undead, even Gods can 'die' whether for the first time or die again. Do you fear 'Death' or its 'Confidant'?
