Marmaduke Pickthall
The grave of Marmaduke, a Western Islamic scholar, whose translation of the Quran into English is one of the few translations circulated world-wide enjoyed by so many.
Islam teaches us to remember the dead, and that one day we too will die leaving this world for the next. The Arabic inscription reads, "From God have we come and to God is our return".
A convert from Christianity to Islam, Pickthall was a novelist, esteemed by D. H. Lawrence, H. G. Wells, and E. M. Forster, as well as a journalist, headmaster, and political and religious leader. He declared his Islam in dramatic fashion after delivering a talk on ‘Islam and Progress' on November 29, 1917, to the Muslim Literary Society in Notting Hill, West London. Born into a comfortable middle class English family, whose roots trace back to a knight of William the Conqueror, Pickthall traveled across many Eastern countries, gaining reputation as a Middle-Eastern scholar.
I love the closing inscription: "Whosoeverth Surrendeth His Purpose To Allah, While Doing Good, His Reward Is With His Lord"
