0411 Bradford Alhambra (58)
Alhambra Theatre, Bradford. Opened in 1914 and designed for Francis Laidler by Messrs Chadwick & Watson. It was particularly noted for its extravagant and long-running pantomimes. However it fell on hard times and the site was seriously considered as the location for a multi-story carpark before thankfully it was acquired by Bradford City Council and eventually in 1986 given a very sensitive and very useful makeover. The stage was near doubled in size, the foyers were largely rebuilt and extended, the adjoining Majestic Cinema was bought and transformed into a studio theatre, and the glorious Edwardian auditorium was beautifully restored (architects RHWL). The grade 2 listed theatre is now a major touring house and is suited for almost any type of production, from drama to opera.
