The destroyers Velox and Watchman visited the town to acknowledge the work of the Vegetable Products Committee in providing fresh fruit and vegetables to the Navy during World War I. Both ships were part of Sir David Beatty's Squadron. Earlier that week they had been at Liverpool to attend the Freedom of the City celebrations being awarded to Sir David Beatty. Watchman and Velox were both dispatched from the Squadren to visit Preston before returning to station at Scapa Flow. The ships received over 50,000 visitors during their 5 day stay at the docks.
