London Midland and Scottish Railway Hughes “Crab” 2-6-0 13065 waits to depart Bury tender first with a train to Heywood, 23rd May 2015. The engine is painted in Crimson Lake livery which it carried when built and the high gloss finish on the tender reflects the adjacent white platform edge along the bottom edge.
Locomotive History
13065 is one of a class of two hundred and forty five locomotives designed by George Hughes, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London Midland and Scottish Railway built between 1927 and 1932. Hughes retired before construction began and his successor Henry Fowler tried to have the design altered to use standard Midland Railway components. However the design process and pre-production were sufficiently advanced to prevent the majority of these changes although standard Midland Railway boiler fittings and brake equipment were substituted. The Hughes designed tender was also replaced by a Midland Railway standard type, which was narrower than the cab. 13065 was built at Crewe Works and entered traffic in August 1927. It was re-numbered 2765 in 1934, 42765 in 1948 and was withdrawn in December 1966.
