Postcard: Floral Hall, Belfast

Following on from my Multiview postcard from Belfast, here now is a postcard view from 1963 of the Floral Hall in Hazelwood, Belfast. The hall is regarded as an outstanding example of a 1930s Art Deco Modernist public building, and was originally built as a dance hall.

Opened in May 1936, it had a striking blue and gold interior colour scheme, a tangerine entrance hall, and capacity for 1,000 people. It quickly become a popular venue, and remained so right through to the late 1960s. People travelled from all over Northern Ireland to dance in the Floral until the Troubles arrived.

Today the hall, owned by the city corporation and situated in the grounds of Belfast Zoo, is disused and in apparently poor condition.
