The Man Orchid (Orchis anthropophora, formerly Aceras anthropophorum)
Man Orchids have declined markedly in Britain during the the 20th century, and at present is rare and classified as endangered. There are few new populations becoming established, and many populations have become extinct, this is mainly due to agricultural intensification (the ploughing and fertilizating of old fields). Conservation of the remaining populations requires moderate grazing by sheep to maintain a short turf and to promote seedling uptake.
