Postcard - reverse - Battleship USS MAINE - postmarked Chico CA 1908 08 20
Postcards were the "e-mail" of their day. This one was postmarked from Santa Cruz CA on the morning of August 20th, 1908 and postmarked in Chico (opposite side) on the same day. The two cities are about 235 miles apart. (Unfortunately, the stamp has been detached from the card). With twice-daily deliveries, the postcard could have been delivered on the 20th or the 21st of that month.
The postcard is illustrated with a picture of the battleship USS MAINE (BB 10), the second ship to bear the name, which honored her armored cruiser predecessor, which was blown up in Havana harbor, Cuba, just prior to the Spanish American War.
It is interesting to note that USS MAINE (BB 10) was, at the time this postcard was mailed, engaged in the Great White Fleet circumnavigation which brought global attention to the United States' emergence as a world power. In fact, the Fleet had just arrived in Sydney, Australia on August 20th, 1908. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_White_Fleet
