My First NI Saddleback (Tieke)
The North Island Saddleback (Tieke, philesturnus carunculatus) is another endemic bird that is not plentiful in New Zealand. This was seen on Tiritiri Matangi when I visited Auckland last month. Unfortunately this image does not show the bird's rust coloured "saddle" but this was the only bird I saw which didn't have branches, etc, obscuring part of the body. (These birds tend to rumage about on the ground a lot).
