Signs

For the month of August, “Signs”, a temporary public art project installed on street light poles at the five Summer Streets rest stops, examines the way signage employs simple iconic pictograms to convey information to the public. The artwork uses the aesthetic of the sign itself and transforms it to present McGinness’ personal, surreal and poetic concepts. A total of fifty signs can be found along the route. The installation encourages Summer Streets participants to explore and dissect the artwork to find hidden forms, messages and meanings. McGinness was influenced and inspired by artists like: Hieronymus Bosch and Andy Warhol, and periods in art like: Surrealism and Pop Art. Within the signage, you will find hidden moral or narrative messages illustrated by playful unicorns, hearts, clouds, table legs, etc. However, McGinness also utilizes symbols and forms that don’t have any meaning other than purely creating an artistic composition.
