Cheers Drive
The title will be familiar to many Bristolians and perhaps also to those who have had some experience of the Bristolian vernacular. Around these parts "Cheers Drive!" is often heard when someone alights from a bus, addressed to the driver by the departing passenger.
The scene depicted in this photograph records the first time I'd heard those words spoken in a non-bus context, by the railwayman who has just climbed out of the cab of IET No. 800026 at Bristol Temple Meads on Tuesday 26th February 2019. The train will soon continue on its way with 1A09, the 07:12 Taunton to London Paddington service.
Class 70 locomotive No. 70801, seen here stabled at the end of platforms 5 and 7, remained in that spot for about three days.
