Round-tailed Ground Squirrel (Xerospermophilus tereticaudus)

Best viewed large.

We took a trip down to the Audubon sanctuaries in Texas to catch the warbler migration. It was not as successful as I hoped, only seeing a few warblers.

This pair of ground squirrels were found in Catalina State Park, Arizona, on the Northern edge of Tucson.

These gossips live in the desert of the Southwestern Arizona, South Eastern California and Northwestern Mexico.

Xerospermophilus is a genus of 4 species of ground squirrel in the family Sciuridae. The members of this genus were formerly placed in the large ground squirrel genus Spermophilus. Since DNA sequencing of the cytochrome b gene has shown Spermophilus to be paraphyletic to the prairie dogs and marmots.
