Muchelney Abbey

I took a step into medieval England last week exploring the ruined Muchelney Abbey in Somerset.

One place on the Somerset Levels that survived the horrific floods of recent years, becoming a part-time island. The monastery was built in the tenth century and became a wealthy Benedictine house. It was destroyed in 1538 during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. Luckily the Abbots house and main church survived. English Heritage look after the place now and I took full advantage of their free samples of Mead and Nettle Wine available at the abbey!

Black clouds overlooked my visit and there was a haunting feel to the place in its large empty rooms and the odd empty grave hole outside.. It definitely suited a black and white set of images.
