Plantage Muidergracht | Nieuwe Prinsengracht 18/12/2020 17h18

One of the only 7 installations of the 9th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival is located on the Roeterseiland along the Plantage Muidergracht and located in the tiny park on the Plantage Muidergracht. The theme of this year is "When Nature Calls", very appropriate this day and age.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam. Artists, architects and (light) designers from all over the world bring their light artworks and installations alive during the festival every winter.

EDITION #9; NO ROUTE BUT OUR LIGHT KEEPS SHINING

This Edition is different from previous Editions. This Edition we are unable to realize a walking route, there will be no boat tour and no festival. Thanks to our partners, we will, however, illuminate the city with light art. We will place seven works of art spread over four different city districts. The lights are shining!

THE WATER WE BREATHE

Stichting Nieuwe Helden

An art, science and education project in one; 'The importance of oxygenated water' tells the story of the invisible but also indispensable role that micro-organisms play in oxygen production. Did you know that half of all oxygen on Earth comes from water? The microorganisms that live in the water make oxygen when light shines on them.

How much oxygen do the Amsterdam algae provide? And is it enough that we as city dwellers also benefit from it? We are investigating exactly how that works, together with hundreds of primary school students. Together we will create a light artwork - entitled 'The Water we Breathe' - and share our findings with the city.

This fall 650 Amsterdam primary school students conducted research into the levels of oxygen of the water in their neighborhood. Why that is so important? Because microbes in the water provide half of all oxygen on Earth with the help of light! Colored water samples from the students form a formula for a large map of the city.
