Fire Tower atop Goodnow Mountain
Like many many peaks in the Adirondacks, there is a firetower a top the summit of Goodnow Mountain.
These were built in the early 20th century and were manned 24-hours by fire rangers, whose cabins often survive nearby.
Fire has always been a concern here- One in the 1920's sent smoke as far as Washington, DC. When a fire was spotted, the towers would triangulate the position of it, making it easier to find and fight it in the wilderness of these mountains.
Today, they make excellent lookouts, though the climb up is very rickety and harrowing for those with a fear of heights. I hated being perched up there, but forced myself for the view.
