A self portrait captured on top of Meal Fell in the Lake District, looking out towards the small lake of Over Water and the most northerly Wainwright summit of Binsey.
Whenever anyone asks me which hill in the Lake District is my favourite, my mind always goes completely blank. There are so many to choose from, each one possessing unique characteristics, that it is almost impossible to pinpoint a standout.
Having said that, out of all the hills there is definitely one where my heart lies, and that seems to be Meal Fell. Don't ask me why, as I suppose not many other people would choose this hill as their favourite of all Lakeland Fells, but for me it feels like a close friend giving me a hug every time I visit. In fact, alot of hills in this area give me that same homely feeling; perhaps because this was the first area I started exploring as a young lad and got me hooked on spending time in the outdoors.
I think I like Meal Fell so much because it has a few characteristics which I also possess. It is tucked away; a lurking and secretive soul who doesn't like to stand out from the crowd, but upon getting more closely acquainted you will uncover it's hidden character.
So what better way to express my love for this fell than sharing this self portrait near the summit.
It was pretty hard work capturing this image as I had to manically dash back and forward to the foreground mound between the 10 second timer. Unfortunately I lost my remote control last year and have never got round to replacing it, so the only option here was to put the camera on a short timer. The light was very fleeting so I had to act quickly, and unfortunately the wind was extremely strong so a few of the images ended up blurry, but fortunately a couple ended up being worth the effort - this being the best of the bunch.
Hope you all enjoy the picture!
