Southern Wood Ants in Blean Woods

In Blean Woods near Canterbury, colonies of the Southern Wood Ant (Formica rufa) can be found. One of the largest ant species in the UK. Their nests are large mounds on the ground (sometimes 1 metre tall), and there are thousands in a colony.
