Anatomy of a Treaty

The Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed in 1851. The upper bands of the Dakota ceded half of present-day Minnesota to the government in exchange for concessions which included monitary considerations and a reservation, among other things. In the years that followed, numerous promises included in this treaty were broken by the U.S. government. Tension came to a head in 1862 with what is now known as the U.S.-Dakota War. This six week war changed the course of Minnesota history. Over 1000 people lost their lives in the conflict.
