Futarasan Jinja 二荒山神社
The honden, or main hall, of Futarasan Shrine.
Futarasan Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nikko, was founded in 767 by Shodo Shonin and takes its name from Mount Nantai (Futara-san) which is surrounded by Lake Chuzenji. This important mountain was significant as far back as the Yayoi period when it was believed the kami of the mountain supplied fresh water to the lands below. The most famous feature of the shrine is the Shin-kyo, a sacred bridge over the Daiya River.
