Studio stack: Devil's Coach Horse

Ocypus olens, Staphylinidae

Size: 27 mm

Guess what, this is a predator. And it has to be one of the more agressive beetles species in Europe. It has powerful mouthparts and knows how to use them if you pick them up carelessly.

As a bug photographer you often get the reaction "Ewww.... It's a good thing they're so small". In this case I actually tend to agree – I wouldn't like to meet a dog-sized Ocypus olens!

Stacked from 203 exposures in Zerene Stacker.

Canon 5DmkII, Mitutoyo M Plan Apo 5X 0.14, Apo-Rodagon 150/9.
