Frank Mason, artist and teacher, critiques student landscape paintings in Stowe, Vermont
For more than 50 years, Frank Mason has taught artists the methods of the Old Masters at the Art Students League of New York. Many of his former students attended Mr. Mason's 85th birthday celebration at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. Here is a slide show of that event.
This great artist has also taught a private landscape painting class in Stowe, Vermont every June for decades. Each Saturday during the month, Mr. Mason critiques a painting from every student in an old barn that has been converted into an impromptu amphitheatre with strategically placed bales of hay.
In this small example of his instruction, Mr. Mason shows the student a better way to give the illusion of sunlight on a rural dirt road. At the end of the clip, he can be heard to say, "...as long as it is ruled with violet." Violet being the common "color-denominator" of sunny landscapes.
