(Museum description) Japanese military stirrups were designed to protect a warrior's feet and ankles and to provide a secure footing while shooting arrows. The inlaid silver designs are a stylized hemp leaf (asanoha) pattern. The artist served the Kaga domain, one of Japan's wealthiest.
