We protect what we understand. That's why dynamic and knowledgeable advocates like Cooper Union and NYSID teacher Barry Lewis are ideal ambassadors for preservation.
On Sunday afternoon, December 7th, renowned historian Barry Lewis' 90 minute presentation on NY in the Greek Revival Era engaged a very attentive audience of over 125 people from the tri-state area. He introduced them to the vocabulary and grammar of 19th century building design as it drew inspiration from the Greek and Roman temples of antiquity. Lewis concisely explained how the "architecture of democracy" followed a period of Georgian and Federal aesthetics and how the great fire of 1835 further prompted the use of granite and Westchester marble in the construction of the edifices of tall columned banks and residences. Many fine examples of Greek Revival architecture still exist today - Federal Hall (originally the US Custom House), Alexander Hamilton's The Grange, the Merchant House, Bartow-Pell, and of course the 1838 Jay Mansion.
The event was so popular that a second talk by Barry Lewis is being planned for spring. (Photos by Cutty McGill)
