St Teresa's Gardens Where Things Went Badly Wrong [Donore Avenue] REF-103507

The area now occupied by St. Teresa’s Gardens was originally farmland known as Day’s Field, where horses were held and trained. The initial 360 flats were built by Dublin Corporation in 1950. At the time of construction, the flats were considered modern and were much sought after. I believe that the complex was added to in the 1960’s.

I don’t know when things began to go wrong but I worked in the area in 1979 and it was considered to be a no-go area because of a major drugs problem at a time when the drug problem in Ireland as a whole, was relatively small. During the period 1978 to 1985 about 1250 people lived in the complex.

As part of the regeneration of the area the demolition of 14 apartment in St Teresa's Gardens began early this year, clearing the way for 50 new residential units comprising 16 apartments and 34 houses as well as an urban park.
