Ziricote Wood – Exotic Lumber – in Frederick MD at Hardwoods Inc.

Ziricote (Cordia dodecandra) is an exotic timber coming mostly from Central America and Mexico. Ziricote has the most unusual color and grain pattern of any exotic wood we stock. It can have a dark brown to almost black background color with strands of green and purple throughout. When freshly surfaced the face of the wood resembles a clear piece of lumber that has been splashed with solar-lux jet black stain then swirled around like finger paint and left to the forces of gravity to run and drip dry to produce a pattern like no other lumber. The surface of this hardwood is medium to fine with an interlocking grain and as such can be tough to work so use carbide tooling and good sharp hand tools for optimum results. Ziricote contains oils that can occasionally cause troubles when gluing, however this is not a problem that has been reported by many. This wood has a sweet almost rosewood smell when cutting and finishing is easy with teak oil, tung oil, urethanes and lacquers. This truly unique exotic timber is used primarily for musical instruments such as acoustic and electric guitars. Other uses include gunstocks, woodturning, furniture making, art glass frames and fancy boxes. We stock Ziricote lumber in 4/4 boards which range in size from 3” to 8” wide and from 3’ to 5’ long rough sawn or surfaced as well as turning squares, pen blanks and exotic wood veneers. We also stock over 150 domestic and exotic hardwoods for your woodworking enjoyment. Come and see us at Hardwoods Inc Exotic & Domestic lumber in Frederick MD.
