Fort Miami / Maumee Downs

Racing at the Fort Miami Fairgrounds appears to have originated as far back as 1902. In 1929, Fort Miami became the first track in the country to install lights for night harness racing.

Maumee Downs opened at the same location in 1958. Over their history, the two tracks offered both thoroughbred and harness racing.

The site of the Fort Miami and Maumee Downs tracks is now the playing field for Ned Skeldon Stadium (Lucas County Recreation Center). This stadium was the home field of the Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball team. The former track grandstand now serves as the bleachers along the third base line of the baseball stadium. The floor of the clubhouse has inlays of racing-inspired designs.
