Sciadopitys verticillata (Japanese Umbrella Pine or Koyamaki)

We thought we would show some of the individual plants, including conifers and bamboos that we may not have shown on Flickr before.

This extraordinary Japanese conifer is like a “living fossil”. It is the only member of its family and genus and has no close living relatives. It is thought to have existed for over 200 million years. It has bold green 'foliage' and is slow growing.

It has brown main shoots bearing whorls of 7–12 cm long flexible green cladodes which look like and bear the function of leaves, but are actually composed of stem tissues. Occasionally, a cladode will be forked and produce a bud in the 'v' of the fork. The cones are 6–11 cm long, mature in about 18 months, and have flattish scales that open to release the seeds.

If unpruned it usually reaches a height of 1.5-5.5m after 10 years however, it is able to reach a maximum height and spread of 20m x 8m.......but as you have guessed we would not let it grow that large in our garden!
