Astronauts visit EUCOM

STUTTGART, Germany — Retired NASA astronaut and Air Force Col. Guion Guyy Bluford, Jr., shakes hands with a member of the USAG-Stuttgart community during a visit to the Patch Barracks Community Club Oct. 28 commemorating the 25th anniversary of the STS-61-A D1 Launch of the Challenger Mission transporting a European Spacelab research module to conduct scientific experiments in orbit. Bluford, an engineer, was one of eight crew members who were part of the largest space flight of the time, which included three European payload specialists from the Netherlands and West Germany. The mission was under the direction of the German Aerospace Research Establishment, or DFVLR, and was the first U.S. mission where payload control was transferred to a foreign country.
