Education brings smiles and hope to children and young people in northeast Nigeria
Thousands of schools have closed in northeast Nigeria due to violence. Schools are often targeted in the ongoing conflict as armed groups view education as an abomination. The EU provides funding to ensure education can continue for those affected by conflict. However, schools in these environments are not typical and differ from the formal system taught across the country. The system here is “non-formal”; children and teens learn together in the same class. The curriculum, the accelerated learning programme, was conceived to help children catch up with all the learning they have missed.
