Cartagena: My iPhoto book
I'm thrilled!
I just received a beautifully bound copy of a book I did with my travel photos from Cartagena (see set) using the iPhoto tool on my Mac.
What I liked of the experience: The most amazing feature was, for me, how simple it is to use. A first session of one hour, and then another one of 30 minutes sufficed to lay the whole thing out – 90 minutes total, that's pretty amazing when you come to think about it (I'm a graphic designer by trade, and that amazed me anyway). There is also a variety of templates to choose from. The interface of the application is very user-friendly (as anything Apple does), and easy to understand.
Given the immediacy of the experience, both in putting in together and receiving it at my doorstep a few days later, it's a very nice quality production, understanding and accepting the limitations of the reproduction methods used. Colours are fine, the bounding impressive, and it comes in a sexy Apple box – what a treat!
There's plenty of online support, clear and simple to follow, some instructions are even available in video format (!!!).
What I liked less: The biggest disappointment for me was the cropping of the images. There is no control on it – the program makes all the decisions. So some images in particular resulted with unhappy 'amputations'. I suppose it's the trade off one must accept for the incredible ease-of-use.
The control on type is also very basic, but again I can't be too much of a hard critic when things are made that easy for me.
Overall I would highly recommend trying it out for anyone wanting a good looking showcase piece, and getting it quickly with minimum effort and at an affordable price. To be enjoyed only by Mac users – sorry PCs.
