Cruiser ARA General Belgrano
In 1982, Argentina tried to recover the Falklands Islands (Malvinas in Spanish) and the British sent a Task Force to recover the islands.
HMS Conqueror, a British nuclear submarine located the General Belgrano outside of the exclusion zone but considered the ship a threat, since another group of ships with the Aircraft Carrier Veinticinco de Mayo was also approaching the islands from the North.
Margaret Thatcher, the British Prime-Minister ordered the sinking of the ship.
Three torpedoes were fired and two hit, sinking the ship. The submarine left the area and the survivors stayed in the cold Antartic waters waiting to be recovered for two days. In the end, 323 men died.
