Vlieland - Vliehors - Humpback Whale in crane Leopard II ARV

On Tuesday 22 June 2004, a humpback whale stranded on the Vliehors , the western part of Vlieland, one of the Frisian islands in the north of the Netherlands.

A nylon rope was wrapped around the head of the whale and cut deep into its body .

This is possibly the cause of death.

The specimen was a young male approximately eight meters long.

The skeleton of the humpback was put together by Naturalis and is being displayed in EcoMare.

The image shows how the dead Humpback whale is brought to its grave with a Leopard II Armoured Recovery Vehicle.

This vehicle was stationed on the island because the Dutch Cavalry had a gunnery range on Vlieland.
