The Alter of St. Peter

St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City is easily the biggest building I have ever been in. And easily one of the most beautiful. The extremely ornate alter was sculpted by Bernini (out of bronze stolen from the Pantheon, but we will ignore that), and is even bigger than it looks. The dove in the center of the oval window behind is as wide across as a man is tall. The altar itself sits atop the ancient burial site of St. Peter, who was martyred in Rome.

This image is a 3 photo HDR to overcome the light limitations inside the basilica.
