Leroy Schoolhouse
A small, wooden, one-room school house. Not much to look at but once this was a place of learning and education. Now it stands amongst the farm fields, testing time, on the Colorado prairie.
This one room school house is all that remains of the once bustling town of Leroy. The "Le Roy" post office was opened in 1888 and moved from farm house to farm house. The name was eventually shortened to "Leroy" for simplicity in 1895.
The original settlers of the town were German speaking. They constructed the Leroy Rock Church in 1889, but in 1924, the church was abandoned and razed and services were moved south to the new Leroy Methodist Church. The town of Leroy was laid out in 1889, and by 1890, had 440 residents. Hard to believe based on what's left, but the town had two general stores, a hardware store, a blacksmith shop and even a small broom factory. The original school house was made of sod, but was then replaced by this one-room, wooden structure that still stands today. In 1918, the post office closed and the town faded away.
