Dr. Harold Bernard Cassidy was a plastic surgeon who performed surgery on John Dillinger's face in this office, assisting Dr. Wilhelm Loeser. Cassidy injected an overdose of anesthetic which nearly killed Dillinger, who swallowed his tongue. However, the surgery was a success and Dillinger gave him $500 for his troubles.
In 1933 Cassidy and Loeser were arrested and charged with harboring a fugitive. They were given suspended sentences in exchange for testimony against Dillinger.
He served as a physician on Indian reservations and during World War II rose to the rank of Major in the Pacific. After the war on July 27, 1946 he came back to Chicago and stayed with his sister, who lived in this apartment.
He suffered a nervous breakdown and shot himself in the head in front of his sister and mother.
