Monarch Egg on Milkweed - Just Before Hatching
August 9, 2017
The monarch butterfly eggs laid on our milkweed plants on August 4th 5 days ago are looking like they are about ready to POP! The bluish tint is the tiny caterpillar's head. They will soon emerge.
Some shots are natural light, long exposure. Some are using the on-board flash. With the long exposure, natural light shots, the top of the egg looks blue. It is the same with the naked eye. When I add a flash, the egg reflects the light, sparkling like a tiny bioluminescent jellyfish at night. Because of the slight breeze, I had to resort to the flash. The milkweeds were swaying just enough to take the image out of focus.
These eggs are a little over a millimeter in length.
