The Bridge of Arta (Greek: Γεφύρι της Άρταςo) over the river Arachthos is located west of the town of Arta in the Epirus region and is the most famous historic bridge in Greece. In its present form the bridge dates back to 1612. It is built of stone and has four arches. It is famous for its unique architecture, but also for a legend associated with its construction. According to a legend in order for the bridge to remain standing the builder had to sacrifice his wife being built in the foundations of the construction.
