MT Headframe Barber Shop Butte

Headframe Barber Shop, 1807 Harrison Ave, Butte, MT

Official MONTANA haircut, September 4, 2009

While on vacation in Montana, I stopped to visit the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines (and also the largest Superfund environmental disaster in the country). While driving through Butte, I noticed the Headframe Barber Shop. It is located in a converted theatre, with the barber shop using the old marque. The barber shop has two chairs (one reserved exclusively for appointments), and four chairs (plus footstools) for waiting customers. There are pennants of all sports on the wall (NFL, MLB, Montana, NASCAR) and shelves holding hair products for sale. When it came my turn, barber Randy Rodino mentioned he had once been in the Smoky Mountains and went as far east as Asheville. When another customer (Dave) came in, we talked about a recent hailstorm of tennis-ball sized hail. The resulting destruction of windows and siding was “the best thing for Butte’s economy in recent years.” They also agreed that the wolf population needed to be controlled and spoke of a family deciding to maintain two homes so their sons could play hockey in Michigan. I joined the conversation whenever I could. I picked the barber shop because of its exterior and creative redevelopment of an architecturally interesting building (the shop occupies what once was the theatre lobby). I paid $11 for the haircut, plus a tip for the barber.
