Books: Justus Georg Schottel, "Ausführliche Arbeit von der Teutschen Haubt-Sprache"
A page from one of my most treasured possessions, a facsimile copy of Justus Georg Schottel's Ausführliche Arbeit von der Teutschen Haubt-Sprache from 1663. (My copy is much more recent. :-)
The book was a gift from my late friend Professor Alan Menhennet during my time studying German historical linguistics at the university of Newcastle. Schottel (also known as Schottelius) was one of a number of German grammarians attempting to describe and define the language in the 17th century, long before spelling and usage were standardised.
This page is listing rhymes and riddles.
