Russian POW WWI gravesite
Hundreds of Russian POWs were building the road that is now the Vrsic Pass when an avalanche killed them. This, combined with the grisly history of WWI's Soca Front (named for the stunningly beautiful Soca Valley and written about in "A Farewell to Arms"), made for a striking dissonance between nature and humanity.
