Neo-gothic church turned into a brewery

Europe, Netherlands, Noordholland, Haarlen Jopen brwery brasserie (cut from B&T)

I've been in churches that have been transformed into conference centre, community centre, book shops (like the Dominicanen book store here ) and a brewery/brasserie. The latter one, depicted here, is thru its shameless epicurism, the most fascinating one. It's the Jopen church. It used to be the Veste- (later Jacobs-) church (a 1910 neo-gothic building, build for the Dutch liberal reformed church (vrijzinnig hervormde kerk) ). It was deconsecrated in 1975, used as an art gallery and has stood empty for a while. It was almost demolished because of the redevelopment of the Raak quarter. Thru a slew of lawsuits the plans were eventually halted by the High court and the church was sold to the brewery which had it transformed in 2010.

The Jopen brewery is a fine example of the small scale artisanal beer breweries that have sprung up in the last fifteen years in Holland. These breweries swiftly found their urban customers. In Rotterdam, there are even two artisan breweries (Noord en Kaapse Brouwers).

This is number 21 of the Churches album here. And numer 62 of the six word stories album here. .
