Walter Nash (New Zealand Prime Minister) & Abdul Razak Hussein (Malaysian Politician) in Kuala Lumpur - 1960

On March 11 1922 Abdul Razak Hussein was born. He was the 2nd Prime Minister of Malaysia ruling from 1970 to 1976. After the general election in 1959, he became the Minister of Rural Development in addition to holding the portfolios of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, which he held from 1957. Abdul Razak Hussein died on 14 January 1976 while seeking medical treatment in London. His eldest son Najib has been Prime Minister of Malaysia since April 2009.

 

The image shown here is of Abdul Razak Hussein greeting New Zealand Prime Minister Walter Nash. Prime Minister Nash arrived in Kuala Lumpur on 5 June, 1960 on a two-day visit. The picture shows Mr Nash chatting with Abdul Razak Hussein who was then Deputy Prime Minister, Federation of Malaya. Also pictured is the Minster of Education, Enche Abdul Rahman bin Eaji Talib. This image comes from the Walter Nash papers which Archives New Zealand holds. Walter Nash was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1957 to 1960. After defeat in the 1960 election Nash remained MP for Hutt until his death in 1968. Notable items in the collection include images of Nash and Indian Prime Minister Nehru and Nash meeting Australian Prime Minister Robert Menzies.
