Wat Wisunarat, Luang Prabang
Wat Wisunarat is the oldest of the many fine temples in Luang Prabang dating back to the 1513. Its most distinguishing feature externally is the large stupa with a domed top, meant to resemble a lotus flower but more commonly known as the watermelon stupa because of its unusual shape.
The main prayer hall is a place of serenity and peace dominated by a collection of gilded Buddha images all surrounding the large seated Buddha that is the focal point of the shrine. Around this end of the temple are deposited a collection of further carvings and statues in wood and bronze.
Luang Prabang is rightfully described as a city of temples with so many beautiful Buddhist shrines, too many for anyone to see all in a single visit, but this is the oldest and one of the most rewarding so shouldn't be missed.
